The handover of Hong Kong from Britain to China is of great historical circumstance.  Rising out of barren rock and a product of British aggression toward China some 130 years ago, it is truly miraculous that Hong Kong has developed into what it is today: a thriving, modern international metropolis for trade.  It is Britain's crowning colonial achievement, but it is also China's greatest modern achievement.  After all, the people who built this city and live in it are Chinese.  The peaceful handover of sovereignty of Hong Kong, one of the most prosperous cities in the world, is an event worth commemorating.
